At the time of Ramayana, Rama with Sita and Lakshmana stayed here during vanavasa in forest. Rama was searching for water to apply tilak to his forehead, he did not find any water so he shot arrow to the rock and that made a hole, water came out of it. So this place is called as Namada chilume (nama = tilak, chilume=spring ; in Kannada)

Water comes out of the hole throughout the year and is considered as Thirtha (sacred).
